Enlargement is one of the EU’s most powerful policy tools. The pull of the EU has helped to transform the nations of Central and Eastern Europe into modern, well-functioning democracies. More recently it has inspired far-reaching reforms in the candidate and potential candidate countries. We show in this section how it started and when the current member states joined.

Future EU Enlargement

Successful development of the EU is inevitably influenced by the successful development of its European neighbours, so the EU has always sought close political and trade relations with them. In the current phase of enlargement, the EU also provides specific technical help and targeted financial aid for acceding countries, candidates and potential candidate countries that are still dealing with their own challenges. Here we give an overview about methods and practical arrangements on the current EU enlargement.

Before becoming a real political objective, the idea of uniting Europe was just a dream in the minds of philosophers and visionaries. But the dream persisted and became a reality. Nowadays Europe is united under the European Union – as of January 1st 2007, the population of the EU was about 495 million people in 27 member states. Here you will find information and background news on the 27 Member States.

Candidate Countries

 

A gradual and carefully managed enlargement policy is in the interest of the EU. Future enlargements will concern the countries of south-eastern Europe. Croatia and Turkey are candidate countries. They already have started accession negotiations. In December 2005, the European Council granted the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia the status of a candidate country, but accession negotiations have not yet started. We try to look behind the scenes and explain what this means to the countries and how they are developing at the moment.

Potential Candidates

Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia as well as Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99 are Potential Candidates. The EU has repeatedly reaffirmed at the highest level its commitment for eventual EU membership of the Western Balkan countries, provided they fulfil the accession criteria. Here you will find background information on these countries and their next steps toward deeper cooperation with the European Union.
