2010 European Young Journalist Award - Competition rules
1. General rules
- Participants must be aged between 17 and 35 years at the date of the publication and time of submission to the competition of the published item.
- All topics of all entries must be clearly linked to past, present and future European Union Enlargement.
- The competition is open to citizens of the 27 EU Member States, Candidate Countries (Croatia, Turkey and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), or Potential Candidate Countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia andKosovo under UNSCR 1244/99) and Iceland.
- All submissions must be published / broadcasted by media outlets from 1 October 2007 to 28 February 2010.
- All submissions must have been originally published / broadcasted in either print or online media (including publications of individual companies, associations or universities) or radio outlet. The main editorial office of the media in which the entry was published must be based in one of the participating countries listed above.
- Publications by online media are defined as content (news, comment, background) published via the Internet, particularly material created by journalists who work for press organizations. Blogs and other emerging forms of online communication are acknowledged as part of the online media landscape and online journalism to the extent that the content is produced in a journalistic style and published at consistent intervals (daily, weekly etc.). Content from blogs which have been specifically created for the purpose of the present competition, are not eligible.
- Participants must provide a proof of publishing together with the article (e.g. electronic copy of the publication, screenshot of online publication, signed confirmation from the radio station or – in case of upcoming publication – signed confirmation of publication from print/online media or radio to publish the piece in the future). As regards online publication, only content published on the web before the deadline (28 February 2010) will be eligible.
- The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2010.
- All entries must be written / presented in an official language of one of the EU Member States, Candidate Countries or Potential Candidates or in Icelandic.
- All participants must register for the competition by completing an online entry form.
- Each entry must be submitted with the written consent of the author.
- Each participant may submit up to three entries.
- Team entries will be accepted provided that all major contributors (e. g. researchers, journalists and editors) are listed on the entry form and that the team does not exceed 3 people. However, if a team submission is selected as a national winner only one representative from the team will be allowed to attend the winners’ trips and conference in Istanbul.
- The winners will be chosen by a jury. The decision of the jury will be final and neither correspondence nor discussion will be permitted.
- The European Commission reserves the right to use the winning articles for presentation and media purposes, and is allowed to reproduce it for promotion of the competition and its results.
- Entries will not be returned to competition participants.
In addition, the following specifications must be followed:
Written articles:
- Articles must be written in a journalistic style. Academic papers will not be accepted.
- Articles should not exceed 2,000 words in length.
Radio:
- Entries can include interviews, documentaries, panel discussions, reports or short stories – formats that are eligible for being aired in radio stations.
- Radio clips must be handed in on CD Rom/DVD by mail or be available as podcast download on the Internet.
- Format of the radio entry: MP3 or Windows Media file.
- All participants must prove that people appearing in their radio clip agree to being used for this purpose. Accordingly, a waiver for this purpose will be available for download on the website.
- Entries must not exceed a maximum length of 30 minutes.
